Dr. Elliot Cohen, M.D.

Dr. Elliot Cohen has been treating drug abuse/addiction patients since 1969, when as a young medical officer in the U.S. Navy he established a Drug Awareness Program at Pearl Harbor. He initiated one of the Veterans Administration's first methadone outpatient treatment centers in Baltimore in 1971, for returning Vietnam vets with heroin addiction. As Chief of Psychiatry at the 130th Station Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany  he established the only inpatient Alcohol Treatment Program  for the U.S. Army in Europe from 1975-1979. Before retiring this year, he focused his psychiatric practice on the treatment of heroin addiction.

Dr. Cohen will discuss the biology of addiction, provide statics on who becomes addicted, and discuss in detail his thoughts and experiences on the psychosocial, and medication assisted treatments of opiate addiction.  He will share his opinions on recovery modalities, needle exchange, and other innovative programs.
