Dear friends,
Shalom and L’Shanah Tova! Welcome to the High Holy Days at Temple Shalom! While this time of year can seem very intense and overwhelming, it offers us an opportunity to come together in prayer as a Mishpachah (family) and the chance to reconnect and renew our friendships. It is also a time for great personal reflection and forgiveness.
This time of year also brings two of the greatest traditions at Temple Shalom: on Kol Nidre we honor our history as the past presidents of Temple Shalom carry in the Torahs, and the next evening at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, we honor our future as the children march in together for a beautiful, glowing Havdalah service. It’s these traditions that remind me how truly blessed and loving this community is.As a community we will begin preparing for the High Holy Days with a Selichot service, and we will culminate with Simchat Torah. Details of these services, as well as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot are noted on the tickets distributed to members and are posted on the Temple website.
As we come together during the holiest time of the year, I urge you to join me in making a contribution during our Kol Nidre appeal and Come Light the Menorah event. As you know, our temple cannot survive on dues alone, and while we have made great progress towards diversifying our Temple Shalom income model with the success of the Operations Endowment and various other fundraisers, we must continue to be successful during our annual campaign.
I am asking that everyone participate at whatever level you can to support our goal of raising $18,000. To celebrate our success, please plan to join me as we come together and light the menorah on Friday, December 2, before the Little London Winds concert.
You will also find enclosed all the necessary information to navigate through this year’s High Holy Days. Your packet includes the following:

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Temple Shalom, Ktivah V'chatima Tova - may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

L’Shalom,

Honors
If you are receiving an honor for the High Holy Days such as Carrying a Torah, Opening & Closing of the Ark, or Leading a Prayer or Reading, you will find your name on a card on board inside the front door of the Temple. Please pick up your card when you arrive so our ushers will know you are there. Otherwise, we will assume you are not present and will have to find a fill in which is sometimes difficult to do at the last minute. If you received a letter from the Religious Practices committee informing you of an honor and will not be accepting your honor, please reply to as soon as possible.
As we approach the page number where your honor will take place, please take a seat on the bench on the right side of the bimah (as you face it). At the appropriate time, the Rabbi may call you. Those invited to open the ark should remain on the bimah to close the ark. If your role will include speaking, chanting or any activity, please familiarize yourself with your part in advance. If you have any questions, please contact any member of the Religious Practices committee or reply to the invitation which you may have received.
We look forward to your participation in our High Holy Day services. On behalf of the entire Religious Practices Committee and the Board of Directors, we wish that you and your family will be blessed with a happy and healthy New Year.

Tashlich will be held at Sondermann Park on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Thursday, September 29, 2011 (1 Tishrey, 5772) at 4:00 PM. “Tashlich, meaning ‘cast away,’ is a ritual performed on Rosh Hashanah as a physical reminder of the human effort to cast away one's sins. By casting crumbs of bread into the water and reciting the verse from Isaiah-- "cast all our sins into the ocean's depths" - we state our intention to return to our true selves.” This year, we will be at Sondermann Park. Plan to come early with your family, including leashed pets, so you can explore the trails, vegetation, and birds along Mesa Creek, which runs through the Park, and celebrate Rosh Hashanah with renewed appreciation of G*d’s creation.
